One Franklin Square

The Lost Symbol

One Franklin Square is the prominent office tower above the wooded Franklin Square in northwest downtown Washington, and its rooftop becomes the elevated command post for Inoue Sato’s covert operation. The building’s height and position make it useful for surveying the park below, while the square itself supplies cover for a ground team and an exposed decoy.

Setting and Character

Franklin Square occupies a block in the northwest quadrant of downtown Washington, bordered by K and Thirteenth streets. The rectangular park is wooded, and historic buildings surround it. Among them is the Franklin School, associated with Alexander Graham Bell’s transmission of the world’s first wireless message in 1880.

Rising above the square, One Franklin Square is described as the tallest building in the area: a prestigious office tower topped by two gold spires. From its rooftop, the park and its scattered buildings appear small, an impression that emphasizes the difference between the tower’s commanding elevation and the concealed activity below.

The Rooftop Operation

A UH-60 helicopter arrives from the west after a flight from Washington National Cathedral. On Inoue Sato’s command, its pilot executes a brief touch-hover on the gravel rooftop. The maneuver is illegal, but the skids barely touch the surface and the helicopter remains there only long enough for the team to disembark. It then lifts off, banks east, and climbs to silent altitude, leaving the operation with support overhead that is meant to be invisible.

The rooftop gives Inoue Sato a vantage point from which to supervise the placement of her agents. Warren Bellamy, still dazed after seeing a file on Inoue Sato’s secure laptop, understands that she has framed the matter as one of national security and cooperates. Turner Simkins and the other agents take Bellamy down the stairwell and into the park, where they spread out without drawing attention.

The Park as an Interception Site

The team positions Warren Bellamy in a clearing near the center of the deserted square. The agents disappear into the trees, leaving him alone beneath a streetlamp, pacing and shivering. His conspicuous presence contrasts with their concealment: the plan depends on making the intercept look undisturbed until its intended target arrives.

From the rooftop edge, Inoue Sato watches the operation settle into place. The wind is gusty and cold, and she braces herself against it while considering the square’s layout and wondering which building is Eight Franklin Square. She is waiting for information from analyst Nola Kaye, as well as a call from an agent sent to Kalorama Heights. The rooftop and park thus form complementary parts of a single surveillance arrangement: one offers height and oversight, the other cover and a carefully exposed lure.
